Performance as Trustee
In the eyes of many appreciative parents, employees and taxpayers, Trustee Hilliard is demonstrating what school board trustee can be.
"Public school districts are local governments. They have big budgets, lots of employees, specific powers, and a slew of policies and legal requirements. I have 20 years of experience in government operations, dealing in data and facts, and problem-solving. I brought that and my mission-mindset to my board service. At its essence, the mission is to provide the absolute best education possible to the children of NEISD." - Steve
"As an American, that got my attention. As a military veteran, that kept my attention. I knew that important decisions required intense study, wrestling with different viewpoints, considerations of countless factors such as budget, safety, potential risks and rewards, and impacts on everyone involved.
"'Does this proposal further the mission? Is this a want or a need? How will this be funded going forward? What metrics are we going to use to measure success, and when will the board re-evaluate a program or idea to see if it was good? What policies are creating problems? How can we leverage our relationships to ensure the best outcome? Is this in accordance with the Constitution and our laws? What do the parents and/or teachers have to say?'" - Steve
Before Trustee Hilliard won his race in November 2020, the board had not disagreed on a single vote in over 750 consecutive votes and there wasn't much deliberation.
